If you are planning to use your Gazebo for dining or entertaining, we would suggest a Gazebo at least 12 ft in diameter, anything smaller would probably be too small to accommodate a table and chairs for more than six people at a time. Before constructing a Gazebo, call your local building departments and/or homeowners association to determine whether you need a permit or approval. In some areas a permit is only required for structures larger than 10 ft in diameter or 100 sq ft. Your local building codes might also dictate the type of foundation needed. Again, it differs from area to area. We suggest that anything larger than a 10 ft Gazebo be placed on a minimum of 4 in. thick concrete pad , this could also serve as the Gazebo floor. We suggest that anything larger than 10 ft gazebo be built on a concrete pad, but can be placed on concrete footings dug down to the frost line in colder climates. If you live in a mild climate where frost is not a concern, dig the footings at least 18 in. deep or pour a 4-in. thick concrete slab to serve as the gazebo floor. Setting the Gazebo is another important consideration. Never, build at the bottom of a hill where water collects, pick a level or better yet, elevated spot that gets some sun: if the Gazebo is in the shade all the time, mold and mildew can grow on the roof. A secure and level foundation is required for the assembly of all structures. The simplest method is to use patio stones or a 3” to 6” bed of crushed stone to support the structure and to help with drainage.
